FOOD AS MEDICINE
While all the meals our chefs prepare at La Soupe are designed to fuel our bodies and minds, some of them receive an extra boost in the form of a Medically Tailored Meal (MTM). MTMs are delivered to individuals living with advanced and costly diet-related conditions through a referral from a medical professional or healthcare plan. Meals are fully prepared and tailored to meet the medical needs of the recipient by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). Our MTMs are unique in that they are scratch-made using a majority of rescued food and whole fresh ingredients without additives, fillers, or preservatives.
La Soupe completed the nationally recognized Food is Medicine Coalitions Accelerator program for medically tailored meal programs in 2022.
Currently, our meals are tailored for diseases including heart disease and diabetes and have been used in populations ranging from children to seniors, including expecting mothers.

Food as Medicine Intervention
MTMs help the “sickest of the sick” in our communities, or the 5% of patients that generate 50% of healthcare costs. Rigorous research studies have demonstrated that MTMs reduce healthcare costs and improve overall health outcomes. Providing six months of MTMs is the cost equivalent to one night in a hospital – an effective and tangible solution to equitably improve our healthcare system. With a healthy diet, all of these issues can often be prevented, managed, and treated.
MTMs are most effective when combined with a nutrition intervention and home delivery. We work closely with healthcare organizations, payers, and managed care organizations to get our meals into the hands of those who can benefit the most. Our partnership model can be tailored to meet the needs of each healthcare provider. If you are a health care or managed care organization interested in getting Medically Tailored Meals into the hands of your patients, contact the Food as Medicine Director at hannah@lasoupe.org.
